The League supports dedicated funding for public transit
One of Delaware County’s strengths is its transit oriented communities. Many of our older towns are organized a transit station served by SEPTA trains or trolleys. Transit oriented development encourages use of public transportation, reduces traffic and air pollution including greenhouse gas emissions, and saves open space. Many county residents, including persons with disabilities, rely on public transit to get to work, medical appointments and shop.
The Pennsylvania Constitution guarantees that all the proceeds from gasoline taxes, registration fees and other taxes connected with motor vehicle use will be dedicated to building and maintaining roads and bridges. But there is no comparable dedicated source of funding for Pennsylvania’s public transit system.
The League has long supported legislation to provide a dedicated source of funding in Pennsylvania. Legislation recently passed by the General Assembly would provide additional dedicated funds for Pennsylvania’s transportation needs including public transit by making Interstate 80 a toll road.
