The Justice Bell

The League of Women Voters of Delaware County is a consortium of three local League organizations in Delaware County: Central Delaware County, Haverford and Radnor. Officially known as an Inter League Organization (ILO), our member ship is made up of the members of these three Leagues. We provide voter service to all citizens in Delaware County, monitor all Delaware County Council meetings, greet new citizens at naturalization ceremonies, take action on issues affecting the county where the League has a position, study issues where we do not have an agreed upon position, and maintain a telephone (610) 449-0977 to answer questions about voting and government.

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

The League of Women Voters of Delaware County PA (LWVDelco) is an Interleague Organization (ILO) made up of three local chapters in Delaware County.

Through LWVDelco these Leagues study and act with one voice on issues of county-wide concern and coordinates the League’s county-wide voter’service and citizen education activities.

LWVDelco is a very active a vocal advocate for establishment of the Delaware County Health Department. Other items on our issue and action agenda include:

  1. Action to improve environmental quality--air, water, land use, waste disposal, preservation of open space.

  2. Support efforts to secure fair and affordable housing and increased housing supply for low- and moderate-income persons.

  3. Action to promote responsiveness, accountability, efficiency, and economy in county government with emphasis on emergency preparedness.

  4. Monitor voter registration and election procedures in Delaware County. Action to maintain implementation of the National Voter Registration act in Delaware County. Monitor implementation of the Voter ID Law.

  5. Support changes to improve Delaware County's Home Rule Charter to allow enhanced county representation, more opportunity to take part in the budget process, and citizen initiation of county referenda.

LWVDelco also advocates for more transparency in county government decision-making and provides public information on the structure and function of county government.
Activities include:

  • Coordinating forums and debates for county council, Pa General Assembly and Congressional candidates

  • Assisting other nonpartisan organizations in staging forums and debates for borough and township government candidates

  • Observing meetings of the Delaware County Council

  • Providing voting and other citizen information to new citizens during naturalization ceremonies

  • An annual luncheon, open to the public, with members of the Delaware County Council

  • An annual legislative breakfast, open to the public, for state legislators representing all or parts of Delaware County
